Sun Safety Tips

More than 1 Million people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer each year making it the most common form of cancer in the country. The facts are: 1 in 5 Americans and 1 in 3 Caucasians will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Regardless of race or ethnicity, overexposure to the sun's rays can be harmful and cause skin damage.

The good news is that Skin Cancer is largely preventable through a Broad Spectrum sun protection program. To prevent premature aging, sun damage, and skin cancer, you need to protect yourself and your family from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun, and sunscreen alone is just part of the program. Follow the simple Sun Safety tips to reduce the harmful effects of the sun and keep your skin healthy for years to come.

Sun Safety Tips

  • Use a Broad Spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher 30 minutes before going into the sun. This allows the sunscreen to absorb into the skin. Apply it generous and be sure to reapply it every two hours - more if you are sweating or swimming.

  • Don't forget to apply sunscreen to your ears, lips, feet, hands, neck and bald spots.

  • Cover up with clothing, including a wide-brimmed hat, and UV blocking sunglasses. The Sun can burn your eyes too!

  • If possible, avoid the peak hours of sun exposure between the hours of 10am to 4pm during the sunny summer months, as this is when the UVA and UVB rays are the strongest.

  • Keep in mind that snow, water and sand will increase the exposure of the sun's rays by reflecting incoming UV rays. Try using a higher SPF of 30 or more.

  • Keep newborns out of the sun, and use an all natural sunscreen on babies over the age of six months. Never leave children exposed to the sun without adequate protection. Because of the long time it takes for skin cancer to develop, studies suggest that over-exposure and multiple sunburns early in life may lead to skin cancers later in life.

  • Remember too, medications and some diseases such as Lupus, can make a person more sensitive to the sun. Consult with your physician about this.

  • Examine your skin, head-to-toe, every month and look for any unusual marks, moles, or rough patches. Also be aware of any marks that change in shape, color, or size quickly. When in doubt, check it out. See a Dermatologist every year for a full body skin exam.

  • Skin Cancer is one of the MOST TREATABLE cancers, if caught early. Check your skin, check it often.

  • Do Not Get Sunburned!
Though sunscreen is an important part of your sun protection program, it shouldn't be the only thing between you and the sun. Consider the sun safety tips listed above so you can continue to play in the sun.
There's a reason why the world's top mountaineers set out to summit peaks in the wee hours of morning. Besides staying away from nasty midday storms, hanging out during peak hours of sun exposure, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., can dramatically increase the damage to your skin. Cut down on your overall exposure by taking breaks in the shade to give your skin a rest and your eyes a workout enjoying the scenery (hey, we're not all out to summit Everest!).

Memories of great shots should be the only thing remaining after a day outdoors on the golf course; not a nasty burn. Don't forget UV rays are stronger in the summer and a higher SPF should be used during those months. Treat your skin to Beyond Coastal's hydrating formula, rich with aloe and rose hips oil to keep your skin soft and wrinkle-free.

Looking forward to surfing the waves of Costa Rica or Hawaii? Don't forget the sun's rays are more intense as you move closer to the equator, in tropical and semi-tropical locations. Before hitting the beach on your next vacation, give your skin the best sun screen protection with our all-natural products, which include antioxidants found in yerba mate and green tea that protect and repair your skin.

Out paddling on a high alpine lake? The intensity of the sun is also increased in mountain regions where higher elevations mean the atmosphere is thinner. Extra protection for skin and eyes is necessary in both cases. Choose a lotion with a higher SPF in these geographical locations. Sun protection is a must in the outdoors.

Heading off on a globe-trotting adventure? Certain areas of the world are suffering from severe ozone depletion. Make sure to check the atmospheric advisories in the areas you plan to visit and use the proper sun protection sunscreen and limit your exposure to UVA rays.

Passing on the next wave set, ski run or volleyball game? Surfaces such as water, sand, snow, and pavement all reflect and intensify sun exposure. Because of this you can still get burned even when wearing a hat or sitting in the shade. Grab some of our vitamin rich sunscreen and make sure to not pass up on the protection.

Think your playing it safe by going on your Sahara camel ride on an overcast day? Remember, UV rays can penetrate clouds and haze so sunscreen should be applied even on these days. Beyond Coastal's hypoallergenic formula means the only thing tickling your nose will be the eau de camel.

Still planning on tackling that bike ride even after catching a nasty cold in the office? Don't forget many medications, including certain antibiotics, heart and blood pressure medicines, antihistamines and antidepressants, can cause photosensitive reactions when the user is exposed to sunlight. Taking extra care of your body when you are on medication doesn't have to mean staying inside, you can still enjoy the outdoors by using a high SPF sunscreen and consult your physician or pharmacist before sun exposure when using ANY medication.

Exploring an exotic outdoor spice market? Some fragrances can also cause photosensitive reactions wherever they are applied to the skin. Examples of these are bergamot, citron, lavender, sandalwood, and musk. Our products all include Shea Butter, which soothes the skin and keeps you feeling fine no matter what the conditions.

Beyond Coasta'sl broad-spectrum sunscreens will give you the best outdoor sun screen protection you need for your active lifestyle.
